Unity Forum: History, Action, and the Strength of Community
UCSS Ottawa recently welcomed community members to a special event dedicated to the story, mission, and ongoing work of our organization. The gathering was an opportunity not only to introduce the work of Ukrainian Canadian Social Services Ottawa, but also to reflect on the history of the organization and the values that continue to guide it today.
During the event, guests learned how UCSS began as part of a broader effort to build a social support system for Ukrainian refugees and newcomers. What started decades ago as a response to urgent human need has grown into a strong national network and a trusted community institution. Today, UCSS Ottawa is part of a living tradition of service - one that combines practical support, community leadership, cultural preservation, and long-term development.
A special part of the presentation focused on how this mission was renewed after February 2022. In many ways, the organization’s historic purpose came full circle: once again, the Ukrainian community mobilized quickly to respond to war, displacement, and trauma. Since then, UCSS Ottawa has helped deliver humanitarian and medical aid to Ukraine, including support for hospitals in Odesa, tactical medical kits, thermal clothing for defenders, and logistical assistance for strategic shipments to frontline areas. The presentation also highlighted fundraising efforts in Ottawa, including community events and auctions supporting urgent needs in Ukraine.
At the same time, UCSS Ottawa has remained deeply committed to supporting Ukrainians arriving in Canada. The event showcased integration initiatives that helped newcomers take their first steps in Ottawa - from consultations on documents, housing, and health insurance, to school backpack projects for children, social activities, and employment-focused culinary training programs that helped many participants enter the workforce with greater confidence.
Guests also heard about projects centered on healing, resilience, and family support. These included children’s camps, psychological rehabilitation initiatives for children of defenders, and programs supporting mothers and wives who have suffered devastating loss because of the war. Alongside humanitarian work, UCSS Ottawa continues to invest in cultural and fundraising events that strengthen identity and bring the community together through shared purpose.
The event was also a reminder that UCSS Ottawa’s work is recognized far beyond the local level. Over the years, the organization has built meaningful partnerships with community groups, service clubs, institutions, and international representatives, helping amplify the voice of the Ukrainian community in Ottawa and beyond.
More than anything, this gathering showed that UCSS Ottawa is not only an organization with a proud history - it is an active, compassionate, and determined community force. Our history is not just something we remember. It is something we continue to build together through service, solidarity, and shared responsibility for the future.
